Traveling with his donkey, Stevenson settles down for a night among the pine trees. He wakes beneath the stars, hears a nearby stream, and enjoys the freedom of sleeping outdoors. Yet the quiet also makes him wish for someone beside him to share it. Listen as Dante reads in his gravelly, raspy voice. Includes an excerpt from “A Night Among the Pines” in Travels with a Donkey.

Rain keeps Henry Ryecroft indoors, where a fire, books, and lamplight make the day feel full. But these comforts bring back memories of cold London rooms and times when he could barely afford coal. His pleasure in having enough is shadowed by the fear of going without again. Listen as Damon reads in his deep, dark-toned voice. Includes an excerpt from “Winter” in The Private Papers of Henry Ryecroft.

For the first time in years, Henry Ryecroft can leave his pen untouched without worrying about earning a living. He looks back on his hopes as a writer and begins to enjoy days spent reading, walking, and noticing plants. An encounter with a boy who has lost sixpence reminds him how easily poverty can turn a small loss into a disaster. Listen as Damon reads in his deep, dark-toned voice. Includes an excerpt from “Spring” in The Private Papers of Henry Ryecroft.

Must every hour be spent studying or working? Stevenson argues that wandering the streets, watching people, and stopping for a conversation can teach us things a classroom cannot. With humor and pointed questions, he challenges the idea that being busy always means living well. Listen as Miles reads in his bright, crisp voice. Includes an excerpt from the essay “An Apology for Idlers.”

Stevenson sets out his idea of a good walking tour: travel alone, choose your own pace, and leave room to stop. Along the way, restless thoughts give way to the rhythm of walking, a song, or a quiet roadside break. The pleasure lies as much in how the day unfolds as in the scenery. Listen as Miles reads in his bright, crisp voice. Includes an excerpt from the essay “Walking Tours.”

Thoreau watches winter loosen its hold on Walden Pond. Ice cracks, birds return, and melting ground sends streams of sand down a railway bank in shapes that resemble leaves. Listen as Dante reads in his gravelly, raspy voice. Includes an excerpt from “Spring” in Walden.
